Morgan Newman

The Cape Town local spent his schooling years at one of South Africa’s top rugby factories Bishops. The centre represented the Western Province Academy team in 2004 and played for the union’s U21 side in 2005 and 2006. He also earned his junior national colours with the SA U21s in 2006.

Newman went on to make his provincial debut for Western Province at the age of 20 and claimed 59 caps. He received his first senior national call-up in 2008, where he captained the Emerging Springboks to the Nations Cup title under coach Chester Williams. He also played for the team against the British and Irish Lions in 2009, where they drew 13-13 in Cape Town.

Newman made his Super Rugby debut for the Stormers in 2010, but unfortunately suffered a broken leg in his third match against the Bulls at Newlands.

Since a successful 18-month rehabilitation process, the 25-year-old has played nine Vodacom Cup matches for the Cheetahs and scored four tries. He’s currently training with the Sharks during their Super Rugby pre-season programme.
